How business managers can better support their ISS Offices

HEIBO ISS Business Managers continue to be underrepresented at HEIBO. But why? Are we doing enough to help support these offices at our institutions? This roundtable session will take a look at areas of opportunities across multiple institutions in hopes you’ll walk away with ideas to implement or review to help insert your expertise, streamline processes, and provide the necessary separation of duties. Topics will include:

  1. Enrollment Projections/ Refunds (what are the different policies)

  2. Employment outside of the country

  3. Tax Resources for International Students/ITIN processing

  4. Student Emergency Funds/Tuition Waivers/Sponsored Students

  5. Communication and trainings

Bios:

Paul Butler – Executive Director of Auxiliary and Admin Services, Indiana University

Paul is a Bloomington native and a graduate of the Kelley School of Business. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Management. He began his career with Indiana University in 2001 in the Finance Office of the Vice Provost of Information Technology and Research, joining the Office of International Services team in October 2007. Paul and his wife, Sara, enjoy reading, puzzles, and spending time with their two daughters, one dog, two cats, and three Guinee pigs. To this day, Paul is still actively trying to determine how exactly he ended up with six animals in the house.


 Jody Heckman-Bose – Associate Director Student Services, Unversity of Maryland

Jody is the PDSO, primary designated school officer, for International Student & Scholar Services at the University of Maryland. She has a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration and has worked at UMD for the last 22 years.     Jody oversees the immigration compliance for the 6000 F1 and J1 students at the University.  Like most in the field of international education, she loves to travel, longest time abroad was spent in Nepal where she lived and conducted research on the topic of “Women Pursuing Higher Education in a Developing Nation.”


Kyle Mohan – Business Associate, Texas A&M

Kyle is a Business Coordinator with Academic Affairs Business Services (AABS) at Texas A&M University. He joined Texas A&M in 2012 with the Travel & International Services team in AABS, and is now part of the accounting team, specializing in international business processing. He also helps several non-college academic departments with their business needs of accounts payable, receivable, and domestic travel expenses. In 2020, he earned the title Accounts Payable Specialist (APS) and received the “12th Man” AABS department award for his services to step in when someone needed assistance. Kyle earned his B.S. degree in 2010 with a major in Business Technology and Management at Vermont Technical College. He’s currently pursuing his MBA with Texas A&M University and plans to graduate in the Spring of 2023.
He lives in College Station, TX, with his fiancée and their cat, Maze. Kyle and his fiancée plan to be married in the Fall of 2023. In his spare time, Kyle plays golf and routinely exercises at his local CrossFit gym. He also likes to travel and watches sports regularly.


Uma Namboothiripad is a senior accountant with the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance at the University of Minnesota.

Uma Namboothiripad is a senior accountant with the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance at the University of Minnesota.  She has worked in Accounting at the University of Minnesota for 13 years in a variety of roles from accounts payable/receivable to post-award grants management and external/internal sales contracts.  Uma is primarily responsible for the finances of the UMN International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office.


Catalina Nguyen – Billing Specialist, University of Minnesota

Catalina Nguyen has been with the University of Minnesota for 20 years.  She is a billing specialist for the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance and has been in this position for the past 18 years.  Catalina is responsible for student billing for study abroad programs, posting scholarships, tuition waivers, and processing payments to our onsite partners and providers.
